Final Fantasy XI

Final Fantasy XI: Online is a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) and is the eleventh installment in the wildly successful Final Fantasy videogame series, developed by Square-Enix. Not only is it the first game in the series to incorporate online gameplay, but also Square Enix's very first online game ever. As such, it is a unique MMORPG with gameplay elements that generally don't follow the same style and design as those found in most other popular MMORPGs.

FFXI was originally released in Japan on May 16th, 2002 for Sony's PlayStation 2 videogame console, and the Japanese PC release followed in November of that same year. FFXI did not reach North America until October 28th, 2003, when the PC version was finally translated into English. Due to complications between Square-Enix and Sony, North American players did not receive the original PS2 version until March 23rd, 2004. European players did not get the PC version until September 17th, 2004, and the PS2 version of FFXI was never even released in Europe.

In April of 2006, FFXI was released for Microsoft's Xbox 360 in all three regions (Japan, North America, and Europe). However, the Xbox 360 version was generally not well received by mainstream gamers, probably due in most to the fact that Square-Enix had not bothered to upgrade the game's graphics to next-generation standards, which was something people expected from a next-generation console like the Xbox 360.

Final Fantasy XI is, without a doubt, the largest single Final Fantasy game to date, as it is the only one that has ever had expansion packs and updates that continually add new content for players to explore. Currently, there are four expansion packs: Rise of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urhgan, and Wings of the Goddess.
