Known Crash Issues

Patch Breaks

Some things will cause Windower to crash. One of the main causes is updates to FFXI breaking plugins and Windower.

After a patch, if your game crashes on load, please check the Windower News Forum for news from us.

Disable any broken plugin in init.txt until it is fixed.

3rd Party Incompatibilities

A few things are known to cause windower to crash.

  • IR Devices - Please disable IR devices before using Windower. Either disable it in your BIOS setup, or do the following to disable it in Windows:
    1. Go to the Device Manager.
    2. Uninstall “Microsoft eHome infrared receiver” or any other InfraRed (IR) device.
    3. Allow computer to restart.
    4. When windows starts up, immediately go back to the Device Manager. (Possibly need to do this before it finishes reinstalling the IR device, which it will.)
    5. Now you should have the option to “Disable”, so disable the device.
    6. Restart again.
    7. Play ffxi!

If you skip the Disable step, Windows will try to reinstall this device, and your issues will return without warning.

  • XFire - You can not use XFire with Windower & FFXI
  • Steam - You can not launch Windower with Steam
  • WindowsBlinds/AlienWare Skinning (Any 3rd Party windows skinning) - These will crash FFXI - Use uxtheme.dll hack or disable pol.exe from being skinned.
  • ProcessGuard - Will likely cause problems with windower - Thats what processguard is designed to do, stop windower from doing what it does.
  • Some virtual keyboards. (Like BizarroTrainer)

If you have crashes when hitting Play in POL on Vista, please try out the Windower 3.42.0 Beta.
